除了广为人知的纽约大学和哥伦比亚大学，实际上纽约还有许多很不错的大学。每年都有上万的学生申请入读美国最大的城市公立大学系统——纽约市立大学（CUNY）系统。CUNY 学校遍布纽约市所有五个区，其组成学院的历史可以追溯到 1847 年，而系统本身则成立于 1961 年。该大学系统每年招收超过 275,000 名学生，拥有美国最多元化的学生团体之一。
纽约州的另一所公立大学系统称为 SUNY（纽约州立大学），但 SUNY 的学校遍布纽约州各地，其他著名的公立大学系统包括加州州立大学 (CSU) 和加州大学 (UC)，纽约市立大学系统是美国第四大大学系统，仅次于这三个系统。
